Program Subject I

Coding Nanosatellites

Are you interested in computer programming for real-life applications?

As programmers, you will build a model satellite, rover, or probe and code it to function on different missions in space. Using Hummingbird microcontrollers, you write programs using Python to control the model machine to perform scientific applications.

You will learn through daily challenges the computer programming skills, computational thinking skills, as well as electronics control and artistic modeling while putting your science knowledge and creativity into practice.

You will also become familiar with the iterative engineering design process, and deepen your knowledge of the solar system.

Designing Structures

As structural engineers, you will design, build, and test bridges to meet human needs as well as withstand the forces of nature.

You will learn the basics of bridge types, physics fundamentals, and how to analyze static and dynamic forces. Classroom theories in mechanics and physics are applied to real-world engineering applications.

Starting with roller coasters and skyscrapers but primarily working with bridges, you complete engineering and design challenges with multiple solutions, analyze your solutions with computer software, and learn to identify the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.

You synthesize your newfound knowledge with the final challenge of creating a working bridge project.

Bio Design

How do scientists and engineers use ideas from nature to solve real-life problems? Are you curious how mini to micro robotics emulate nature creatures as medical, surveillance, or special purpose devices?

In Bio Design program, you will experience firsthand the excitement of how the natural world sparks innovation in the fields of biology, technology, and engineering. You will build nature-inspired robots, investigate the science that enables geckos to defy gravity, and engineer your own design application to address a real-life problem.

Join us to gain skills and knowledge about bio-inspired engineering and design while adding valuable experience to your college application and inspiration to your STEM career.

Uncovering Berkeley STEM Disciplines

University of California Berkeley is globally famed as a leading research institution in natural sciences, engineering, computer technology, and mathematics. These disciplines have long been ranked among the top three in the academic world.

You have a precious opportunity to go deep into many research centers & labs, interact with researchers while they demonstrate research projects and offer speeches on subjects and directions of their respective fields of study.

You will take away understanding STEM’s professional attributes and advanced interdisciplinary applications, both real-world and futuristic, to develop your academic interest and even prepare for your college applications.

Students will visit and learn from the following departments/centers during the program:

  • Berkeley research labs & workshops – anticipatively including but not limited to Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Biology & Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Space Engineering
  • Lawrence Hall of Science
  • Berkeley research museums and centers
  • Field trip to engineering sites
